March 9th, 2008

The top of the line of the Coleman portable generator is a premium series, the maxa 5000er+ has the same features as the maxa 5000er (reliable electronic ignition, cast iron sleeves for engine protection, optional wheel and handle portability kit, 6250 watts surge and 5000 watts running power, 5 gallon fuel tank to run 6 hours at 50% load). The maxa 5000er+ portable generator also has two 120 volt outlets and one 120/250 volt twistlock outlet with circuit breaker protection.

Coleman accessories are available in stores and also online. Both portable generators include steel legs, mounting hardware and a 1 year limited warranty on all parts. Options include covers, oil filters air filters and spark arrestors. There are also 2 available portibility kits; the basic kit has one easy grip handle and 2 8″ wheels, the premium kit has two easy grip handles and 2 8″ pheumatic wheels. Pheumatic wheels make the unit much easier to roll and turn so it can be positioned exactly where you want it. A tune-up kit with oil filter, air filter, 2 spark plugs and wrench is available for maintenance.

Coleman is a name that has been around for years and is well known in outdoors and camping circles. They have excellent engineering staff and quality products that last forever. They are also a brand that is carried at many outdoors and home improvement stores.

The same safety concerns apply to this unit as any other portable generator - you should never operate the unit indoors or in an enclosed area, you should not operate the unit in a wet location, you should not overload the generator, you should not let the generator sit unused for extended periods of time, you should never wire the unit diretly into the home wiring system without a licensed professional, you should never refuel the generator without first letting it cool down, you should be sure all extension cords are of sufficient rating for the load and that wires are not exposed, and you should make sure you have tested the portable generator before an emergency arises.

How To Prepare A Home For Portable Generator Use?

January 24th, 2008

The portable generator location is dependent on where your home electrical service is located and where you have access to place the unit away from the living area. You want it close enough so the cost to wire into the home is not prohibitive, but far enough away that the sound of the portable generator running will not be a disruption to your home.

If the unit does not have automatic start-up when power is off, remember to have a way to get to the unit at night if lights and power are off. A portable generator will do you no good if you are unable to get to it to start it up. For security purposes, you might want to enclose the portable generator in a chain-link or wire fence to protect from theft and children at play.

Wiring a generator into the home wiring system should be performed by a licensed electrician. There are issues that must be addressed to protect not only your family, but also other people and workers on the normal electrical system. Electricity will operate in either direction, so you must put filters on your unit to keep it from charging the normal electrical system.

The cost of the parts including the switching box is not cheap, possibly several thousand dollars. The portable generator should be installed in an open ventillated area with a roof or canopy covering to protect it from the weather but still allowing adequate exhaust ventillation and carbon monoxide dissapation.
